Animal’s new rim was designed from the ground up for the evolving needs of the mostly brakeless Animal team. Since most of the team doesn’t use brakes, the rim could be designed without traditional sidewalls, which become the primary braking surface for a bike with brakes. The LM rim is a 36-hole rim with short, angled sidewalls that add lateral strength to the wheel. It’s lightweight (16.1oz) and features angled nipple holes that are setup to cross over the opposite hub flange. But this is not a brakeless bike only rim. It will work with brakes; you’re just going to have to align your brake pads a little more accurately. And that’s not all. Animal are also releasing the LM-R rim (not pictured), which incorporates the same design of the LM rim, but is drilled out in the angled sidewalls to reduce weight. The LM-R weighs just 15.6oz. And both styles are available in four colors to choose from, including green, purple, black and chrome. Look for both rims in stores soon.
